Preventative health at Lillestrøm Sportsklubb (LSK)

Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid balance and skin elasticity

Preventative health at Lillestrøm Sportsklubb (LSK)

Lillestrøm Sports Club was plagued by illness and injuries during preparation for the 2008/2009 season, so they started a Preventative Health programme in October 2009. They decided to improve their players ‘diet, and designed a communal breakfast and lunch for the team, plus Omega-6/Omega-3 balancing oil. The effect was remarkable. Compared with the 2008/9 preparation period, absence due to illness in 2009/10 fell by 85 %, and absence due to injury fell by 57 %. As a result, the players had an extra 42 days per month to train together, and their physical test results improved significantly.

Tests from the players showed that blood values changed from Omega-6 dominance, to a balanced Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid ratio. This enhances the body’s restitution, ability to repair injuries and to maintain good health. Individual players who initially had the worst blood values during the period improved the most; and their protection against life style related health issues linked to fatty acid imbalance increased from 26 % to 74 % between November 2009 and April 2010.

LSK and BioActive Foods have continued their professional cooperation. LSK has made Omega-6/Omega-3 balancing oil available for junior teams and elite teams for men and women. LSK will be studying the general health of the players, their physical endurance, freedom from illness and injuries, and the speed of recuperation after injury.

Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid balance and skin elastisity

The study was performed by BioActive Foods in cooperation with Zinzino.

Fatty acids are important for many functions of the skin. They act as building blocks in the skin cells, they lubricate the skin and they protect the skin from irradiation. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are precursors for "local hormones" and signaling molecules such as eicosanoids.  In this study 50 female voluntaries were divided into two groups; one group consumed 2 table spoons of BalanceOil daily, while the other group functioned as a control group.

In the group that consumed BalanceOil daily, the Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid balance normalized from an average of 15:1 to 4.8:1 in 60 days, while the marine omega-3 (EPA and DHA) levels increased to 6.4 % in the blood. After 200 days the Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid balance stablized at 3:1. A significant improvement (p < 0.05) in skin elasticity was observed in the test group compared to the control group.
